Things to Watch Out for When You Do Backyard Landscaping

Many people don't want to worry about fundamentals and plans when they do backyard landscaping. They just want to jump into the project, thinking that whatever results will be better than what they started with in the first place. In many cases, this can result in some very undesirable results.

There's this story of a man who had a lot of landscaping equipment and was anxious to get rid of the clutter and brush in his yard. His weed eater did a relatively fair job on the bamboo in his backyard. His weed eater did an even better job on the poison ivy in his backyard. But a few months later he realized his mistake. The poison ivy was growing beautifully and powerfully intertwined with the bamboo throughout his back yard. The tangled mess of vines and bamboo kept him from getting his yard cleared out for several years, until he spent big money to hire some poison ivy removal experts to clear it.

Cutting the plant life isn't the only thing a person can go wrong with in backyard landscaping. Another person, a relatively good builder, put up a wall in his backyard. What he didn't consider was how water would drain from this wall. His failure to include a drainage through or around the wall led to a nightmare when water trapped against the wall froze and expanded. His wall came crashing down. There was so much water and debris trapped in his wall that a flood resulted, carrying with it rock, brick, ice, and other debris. This all happened during a party and many of his guests' cars were damaged. All of this happened because he didn't include a simple drainage scheme.

The moral of these stories is to do your research and consult experts before jumping into a backyard landscaping project.
