You have a lot of options if you're choosing a patio cover. Patio covers now come in a variety of materials such as aluminum, canvas, vinyl, wood, and synthetic wood. However, wood still remains the most popular building material for patio covers.

The reasons for wood's sustained popularity in the construction of patio covers are many. Wooden patio covers look nice and can be shaped in a variety of ways. In fact, whatever type and size of lumber is cheapest at any given time can be shaped beautifully into a patio cover.

Wood does a fine job of providing a sturdy structure to protect the patio from the elements, particularly moderately strong winds. It will block the rain and the sun for your patio and patio furniture. Many people use mostly wood and then leave an area of open air for the sun or transparent material-covered area for the sun.

However, there are some drawbacks to wooden patio covers. While wood starts out sturdy and durable, under harsh weather conditions wood can wear down quickly if it isn't treated regularly with expensive treatments. A good treatment followed by a painting will get you the most time between treatments from your wooden patio cover, but in harsher weather conditions this may still be inadequate.

These maintenance factors have led to increased popularity for vinyl and aluminum patio covers. These two patio cover building materials require a lot less maintenance than wooden patio covers. With either of these materials you need to be aware that you get what you pay for when you purchase your materials.

You should have a good idea now which direction you want to go with your patio cover. The next thing you'll have to decide is whether you want to do it yourself or hire a contractor. Unless you're a good and experienced do it yourself builder, a contractor is a good way to go to make sure the job gets done right.
