What to Expect from Garage Plans

Garage plans are not much different than house plans. Garage plans will typically include blueprints that take up several pages. These blueprints pages will contain the details of what you need to do to build your garage.

It all starts with the foundation and any basement or crawlspace included in the blueprints. This should be accompanied by a materials list. The dimensions will be clearly noted. A framing plan should also be included to describe the construction of the walls and the lumber requirements for their construction.

The floorplans for the garage should also include the garage dimensions. If you see parallel lines on the floorplans, this tells you where the walls are to be placed. The floorplans may also note those locations on the garage walls where you can optionally build cabinets or storage shelves in your garage. Roof plans should be included with all of the information you need on the pitch and framing of the roof.

The materials list is a very useful part of your garage plans. More than just telling you what materials you'll need to build your garage, this allows you to get a relatively accurate estimate of the materials cost for your new garage.

If you're not sure what kind of garage plans you need or even what kind of garage you want to build, you can buy entire books full of various garage plans. You can also download garage plans from the Web. Looking over a lot of different garage plans before focusing in on a set of plans will help to make sure that you get the garage you really want.

One of the benefits of getting a whole book of garage plans is that they are professionally designed plans that typically meet the most common building codes, though you may have to verify if any given plans meet your local building codes. If you're hiring a local contractor to build the garage, he should be able to help you with this or make any alterations you'll need to meet local building codes.
